The Legend of the Ancient Flute Songs

As told to John de Boer

This is an ancient legend of the last flute player told to me by an ancient Peruvian medicine man who had a vision that the flute players will find the ancient songs and bring the song of peace back to the world.

The Legend of the Ancient Flute Songs

Many, many years ago when the rivers ran free and our ancient great grandfathers were young men they first discovered music. Many people learned to play the flute and because of the magic of the music in the flute songs they were peaceful.  The music soothed them and calmed them. They lived in harmony as the music flowed and as long as the flute was played they did not war amongst themselves. All were happy and their lives were filled with love and joy.

The legends of old said that as long as the flute played they remained this way, but many started doing other things and did not see the value of the flute music. They did not learn to play and did not learn the natural harmony of nature. They did not understand the value of lessons the flute taught them until there was only one woman left who could play the magic mystic melodies of the ancient ones. As long as she played the peace was held and the world went on as it was, but she became older and older. She was desperate to teach the flute to her children, but they had no time to learn such frivolous things and were busy hunting, trading and planting.

Her spirit finally went to the Great Star Nation and she took with her the ancient songs and melodies from the beginning of time and when she did people started warring among themselves. They thought that power, possessions or killing would quench this need within their empty souls. They sought to conquer their brothers rather than live in harmony. They destroyed and dominated nature and its animals instead of living with them and honoring them.

We all have a song inside us it tells us who we are.

John De Boer (Spirit of Thunder) has been a professional musician for over 20 years.  A multi-talented composer and entertainer, John has been performing on stage and national television since he was four years old.  He holds a degree in fine arts and is a certified music teacher.  John mostly plays by ear, believing that music theory and sheet music are a road map to assist a person in finding the music which resides inside of each of our souls.

Music is not just something that he does; music is everything that he is.

John De Boer has played with or fronted for many well-known artists: Chubby Checker, The Crystals, Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels, Henry Lee Summer, Johnny Paycheck, Lou Cristie, Billy Joe Royal, John Anderson, Merle Hagert, and many more.

John's original flute songs are composed and inspired while playing in natural surroundings by waterfalls or a river.  The Native American Flute sings and echoes as the birds whisper melodies in the wind as the magic flutes play.  The inclusion of these types of sonic backgrounds on his latest releases, "Flute Songs for a Blue Moon" and "In the Spirit"  (available exclusively through Oyate Music Group Recordings), is a testament to these inspirations, taking the listener on a journey of magical explorations with the Native American Flute.

John De Boers' music is played from his heart, and when you hear his songs, you can tell they were born from deep within his soul.
