Roger McGee says that when he first moved
to Joseph Oregon in 1980, he was sitting on an apple crate with an old
saddle maker named Cliff Ketchem. Cliff made saddles for all the
country stars, such
as Walter Brennen, who also lived in Joseph. Cliff told Roger, and
Roger told us, the story of how
Chief Joseph had to leave his land because of the US
Government. Chief Joseph vowed that his spirit would always be here
watching over his land. Roger then pointed up at the mountain and showed
us Chief Joseph's face on the mountain looking over his land. You can
see the big hair on top that Chief Joseph wore, his two eyes, nose
and mouth. On the right side you see two feathers hanging down, and in
his left eye you
see a tear falling down. It gave us chills as Roger told us the story
that Cliff had told him. You can only see this at certain times of the
year when the snow starts to melt or on a new snow. At other times of
the year, Chief Joseph's face is not visible. |

Roger McGee wins
"Director's Choice Award" at the
Wallowa Valley Arts Festival for his African Woman with a baby on
her back. The unique thing about this sculpture is that you can pick it
up and play it; it is a playable sculpture flute! |
